Thoughts for the week: A friend had to give away her dog this week. Sad day. She loved the dog, but it was a bad match to begin with. I remember when she told me about it the first time...she had visited some friends who had one of this breed; she fell in love with its appearance and just had to have one. I tried to tell her then that she should do some homework before selecting a particlar breed of dog, but she didn't listen. PLEASE, I beg you, when your friends are thinking about getting a dog. INSIST that they study up a little before making a choice. There are several great books and even more good web sites devoted to dog breeds and their characteristics.

Maybe the most novel idea I've seen for raising money for dog rescue, the "Siberspace Rescue Fund" collects fur shed by Siberian Huskies (believe me, Katie does her share of making it!), spins it into yarn and knits clothing from the yarn, and then auctions off the garments to raise money for Siberian Husky rescue. Doggone!

William D. Cusick is a self proclaimed expert on dog nutrition and author on the subject. There is an immense amount of material on his web site devoted to his premise that the different dog breeds have sometimes vastly different nutritional requirements. He includes specific dietary information and recommendations for just about every one of the well-known breeds. I neither recommend nor criticize the site, but I believe everyone who is serious about educating themselves as to what they put in their dog's mouth should take a look.
