A Word From Frank:

We live in a neighborhood with fairly large lots and older homes, with the result that a lot of them are being torn down to make way for new construction. Combine that with the melting snow this time of year, every day when we come back from taking Katie for a walk her paws, legs and underside look like a freshly plowed garden plot!
Frank Fleischer
We have a little routine, picking her up (no small task at 50 pounds plus), putting her in the laundry room basin where we have a hose connected to the faucet, and giving all those parts a good hosedown.

Here comes the good part! Katie hates a bath with a passion. But she's such a creature of habit and so anxious to please, she does her very best to help in the process of lifting her up into the basin... front paws reaching up to the top of the basin, poised to try to jump in herself if she could just find a way to do it. What a love!

Aren't they great?

See you next time. Wishing you a warm puppy 'til then.
Frank

Dog Health & Nutrition: Tips from the KSU Poison Control Center

http://www.newss.ksu.edu/WEB/news/newsreleases/listtips121603.html

We all know how our pups of all ages love to put there noses into everything and, likely as not, to try to put it in their mouths as well. Sadly, if it happens to be something poisonous like a hazardous chemical, they may ingest it before we can stop them. Here's what to do if they that happens, from the vets at Kansas State University. You might want to pin it up on the wall somewhere handy, just in case you need it quickly sometime.

Dog Activities and Training: Reinforcement--The Key to successful dog training

http://www.thuntek.net/dogtrain/key2.htm

Every time Katie comes to our kitchen table begging for a scrap and Nonna gives her one, I tell Nonna she's created a beggar by rewarding the begging. It works both ways... this author tells us that "when your dog does something you like, immediately do something your dog likes." Great article to help you and Max get along well with each other.

Patented, Chewproof Kuranda Dog Beds.

What our customers say: "I just thought I would write and thank you for making such a wonderful bed! It was so easy to put together, it took me no time at all, and before I had even tied the lambs wool bed pad in place, Harrison had climbed on and made himself comfortable! He is sleeping as I write this. I heard about the 'Kuranda Experience' from the 'The Straight Poop', and I've been looking forward to being able to give Harrison a warm, comfortable and supportive bed. He is extremely happy with the real thing! Thank you again Kuranda. Bye for now, Emma Evans."

Dogs in the News: Iditarod Dogs Get Check Up

http://www.ktva.com/Stories/0,1413,163~29969~1994548,00.html

From KTVA Channel 11 in Anchorage, we learn that the "Last Great Race", the Iditarod, will start this weekend, and in preparation, all the canine participants are busy getting checked by vets. It's good to know that the dogs aren't just given a once-over but they get the real deal, with EKG's and blood tests, and that they are given a checkup at every checkpoint along the way.
