A Word From Frank:

Frank FleischerRemember back in December I told you about how nearly 200 abused Collies were confiscated while their owners were trying to bring them from Alaska to the lower 48? It's been a major event in Shelby County, Montana, ever since. Recently the owners were given a stiff suspended sentence and required to give up any ownership rights to all but three of the dogs. Although a great many of the dogs have been adopted, there are still some awaiting new homes. Someone told me (I haven't verified it) that all the remaining dogs have to be out of the warehouse where they've been housed by month-end, so there may be a bit of a rush to get the remaining ones placed. I understand they're great dogs. You can learn more here.

We're still in California, enjoying the mild climate, walking on the beach nearly every day, realizing how lucky we are to be here. No, California, contrary to rumor, has not fallen into the ocean yet. I grew up in Hollywood. Hollywood Boulevard deteriorated over the years, but I understand it's enjoying a renaissance of late. We'll take a look in a few days.

Every dog we see makes us realize how much we miss Katie. But she's in good hands, and is spending a lot of time with her pal Yuki. So we don't worry too much.

See you next time. Wishing you a warm puppy 'til then.
Frank

Featured Website: How to socialize your puppy

This outstanding article from Dog Owner's Guide starts out with, "Puppies go thorough a critical period of socialization between eight and 16 weeks of age. During this period of time they mature very rapidly. If isolated from external stimuli and not exposed to the outside world, they can grow up to be fearful adult dogs." And then it goes on to tell you how to do it right. Important stuff.
Dog Health & Nutrition: Overnutrition

Do you want people calling your dog "fatty"? Just 'cause you let a few extra pounds build up somewhere around your middle doesn't mean you should let that to your best friend. A serious discussion of obesity in dogs and how to prevent it, from the SpeedyVet.com site.
Dog Activities and Training: Training 101

If every new dog owner followed the truly simple steps in this article, every puppy would be well behaved and always a pleasure to have in the household. Give yourself and your puppy a break--read it and follow it. From GoodPooch.com

Patented, Chewproof Kuranda Dog Beds.

What our customers say: "Having recently ordered and received 8 Kuranda beds for our small 8-run rescue I and the rest of the volunteers are amazed at how they have changed the dogs' dispositions. All they want to do is lie around! No more dog fights, just a bunch of lazy dogs hanging out on their beds. At feeding time one of the dogs hangs her head over the side of the bed to eat her food! I was a doubting Thomas for awhile but your beds are the best thing to happen to our kennel." Jane Galvin, Big Canoe Animal Rescue

Dogs in the News: Miser leaves millions to Guide Dogs

An elderly British man who lived in a run-down house, bought second-hand clothes and watched television at his neighbour's to save on electricity left a million pounds to a dog charity, newspapers have reported. Joseph Leek, who died aged 90, left 1.1 million pounds to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, but nothing to his two daughters who had no idea of their late father's wealth. Featured Dog Book: Angell Memorial Animal Hospital Book of Wellness & Preventive Care for Dogs, by Darlene Arden

A preventive care program for all puppy and dog owners. Too often dog owners wait until a pet is ill before seeking veterinary advice. The importance of implementing a program that prevents illness from occurring is key to a happy, healthy pet. Topics covered include: Dentistry, grooming and nutrition, Emergencies, surgery, first aid, and vaccinations, Training and behavior, Caring for middle-aged and advanced-aged dogs. Angell's unique preventive care handouts and brochure pages are also included, creating a total-care program for dogs.
