A Word from Frank: A day late, a penny short, as the old saying goes. Stuff happens.

Last week we talked here about a puppy that choked to death in his crate because the S ring attaching his license tag to his collar caught on the crate. We suggested using closed, round rings instead. Some folks wrote saying that a dog should never be left in a crate with a collar around his/her neck because collars themselves have been known to catch and cause the same horrible accident. Balancing that risk with the notion that dogs without collars can more easily be lost, the dialog continued with suggestions to have an ID capsule inserted into a dog's neck by your vet, and to use a very cleverly designed breakaway collar (with D-rings on both sides for when you have the dog on a lead). If that interests you, you can see them at SitStay.com.at www.doggies.com/cgi-bin/links/pl.cgi?ss1; Click here. When you get to the SitStay.com web site, look for EQUIPMENT and then click on collars. Then, it's the second item on the page. Worth a look. I'm getting one for Katie. 111111111111111111111111111111111111111

I've become a believer in the importance of paying attention to the simple things and the details. It can make life a lot easier. Here are a few tips from the American Veterinary Medical Asssociation's Care for Animals site on Daily Care, including grooming, meal time and recognizing illnesses.

The Straight Poop about DOG HEALTH & NUTRITION

Fall is here and Halloween is just around the corner. That means lots of candy around the house. You've probably heard that chocolate is poisonous to dogs, and it's true, so be careful. But how poisonous? Check out this article from TalkToTheVet and find out.

The Straight Poop about DOG ACTIVITIES and TRAINING

Many of us are involved with competetive activities with our dogs. Whether it be conformance, obedience, agility or another of the many "dog sports" out there, it can be lots of fun. But think with me for a minute how satisfying it might be to devote some of that time and energy to something truly productive, constructive, gratifying and satisfying to the soul. I'm talking about Animal Assisted Therapy, like taking Fido to help bring a smile to the face of someone living in a retirement home, or making the day for a sick kid in a hospital. A great starting place to learn about this wonderful human/canine activity is Matt Stoltz's Animal Assisted Therapy site.
