Dog's live in a world they don't understand (which is why they still bark at the postman every time he comes to your door!) and being leader of the pack can be very stressful for a dog. When you establish yourself as leader they will happily look to you for decisions which means if you're fine with something they will be too and people and other dogs become less of a threat. Also, a fearful dog needs you to clearly show them that you are leader of the pack.
